Creating Community Awards names first-ever recipients

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The Cobb Community Relations Council is pleased to announce the recipients of the first Creating Community Awards.

This honor is given to a person, group or business that fosters local cooperation and demonstrates innovative ideas for connecting Cobb's many diverse communities.

Each county commissioner chose a winner from his or her district:

Berry Wind Ensemble to Present Winter Concert

ROME, GA -- The College of Fine Arts at Berry College (2277 Martha Berry Highway NW, Rome, 30149) will present the Wind Ensemble's Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 1 in the Ford Auditorium.

The concert will feature three special guests:

* Joanie Catron, Berry alum and current band conductor at Cass Middle School in Cartersville, will be a guest conductor.

* Rome Middle School secretary Christine McCann will be a guest trumpeter.

* Guitarist and singer Lisa Anders, a Berry sophomore, will also perform; Anders recently produced and released an album, "Misty Pathways."

Glenn Garrido, associate professor and director of bands at Berry, emphasized the unique selections for this particular concert. He said the students have been rehearsing diligently to prepare.

KSU Radio Debuts New Drama 'Harry Strange'

KENNESAW, GA -- A new serialized radio drama is set to debut on Kennesaw State University's OWL Radio Sunday, Jan. 30.

Harry Strange is a serial stylized on the classic radio dramas of the 40s and 50s, but playing against a contemporary backdrop.

"We're excited and thrilled to be bringing this style of radio back to the airwaves," said Reggie Joseph, general manager of the student-run radio station. "This type of experimental programming is what people expect from college radio.

POWDER SPRINGS, GA -- For the very first time, Ballet North Performance Company will grace the stage with a production of The Nutcracker on Saturday, Dec. 18 and Sunday, Dec. 19 at the J. Alton Keith Theater at McEachern High School (2400 New Macland Road, Powder Springs, 30127).

Adults and children of all ages will enjoy this unique premiere of young performing artists and dancers from Paulding County, Douglasville, West Cobb and Metro Atlanta.

The Nutcracker, choreographed by Ballet North Performance Company director Christine Auchincloss Fehr, will go beyond the traditional satin pointe shoes and shimmery tutus.

'Fun in the Park' Photo Contest Winners Announced

COBB COUNTY, GA -- The "Fun in the Park" Photo Contest, hosted by the Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department, is over for 2010.

This year marked the largest turn-out in the contest's history. Over 280 photos, all of which were taken in Cobb parks, were submitted in the three categories.

With so many great photos submitted, the panel of eight judges had a difficult time selecting the winners.
