Meet this year's Kids Who Care

ATLANTA -- 11Alive has named its six 2013 Kids Who Care winners.

The outstanding Atlanta-area teens were recently honored with $1,100 scholarships and certificates of excellence. A TV special dedicated to their many accomplishments will air on 11Alive Saturday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m.

Tiffani Alexander, Covington
Tiffani is homeschooled and works with abused children in Rockdale County, helping them find ways to channel their feelings into something positive.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- After approximately 7 years in Woodstock, Caribou Coffee will be closing the Highway 92 location as of Wednesday, March 27th at 10pm.  Caribou Coffee, the second largest coffee chain, is located near the Target and Steak and Shake on Highway 92 near Interstate 575.

Carmel Elementary students help maintain safety

WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Carmel Elementary School's Safety Patrollers have done a fantastic job this year keeping the school safe and orderly according to school counselor and faculty sponsor, Jason Himstedt.   He added, "These students are conscientious and responsible. They are leaders on campus and set a positive example for others, keeping all students safe."  Each morning, the students help monitor assigned stations in the hallways around the school.  In the afternoons, they help during bus loading.  Safety patrol members also provide students with directions or other assistance they might need.  Himstedt said, "We want to recognize them and thank them for all their hard work!"

Hundreds attend AKA peace rally

ATLANTA -- More than 200 metro Atlanta middle school students attended a peace rally and workshop hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. over the weekend.

The rally was a kickoff for 40 Days of Peace, which begins Monday. 40 Days of Peace is a commitment to kindness and service that encourages young people to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At Saturday's rally, speakers encouraged attendees to stop bullying and stay out of gangs. Police officers gave a presentation on how to interact with law enforcement.

A concurrent workshop for the parents in attendance focused on implementing strategies to keep children safe and on the right track in life.

Eat barbeque to help Acworth man

ACWORTH, Ga. -- An Acworth man is in need, and residents will band together this week to help him.

Jeff Murch, a longtime resident and businessman, has been battling cancer for several years.

His friends and neighbors will host a Helping One Guy event to raise money for his treatment. The fun will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday at JD's BBQ in downtown Acworth.

Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some great food while showing their love for Murch.

Carmel Elementary honors former teacher's memory

Carmel Elementary honors former teacher's memory

The Student Council of Carmel Elementary School organized a food drive for Papa’s Pantry in memory of former AIM Teacher Marcia Olsen. Mr. Olsen and his daughter received the four cart loads of food collected by the Carmel Colts and presented the food to Lynne from Papa’s Pantry on December 20, 2012. Mr. Olsen also proudly donated Mrs. Olsen’s prized rock collection.to the Colts’ Lab where students will be able to enjoy this for years to come.
