Women arrested for robbing nursing home residents

ACWORTH, Ga. -- Two Woodstock women are behind bars in Cobb County, accused of stealing from residents at an assisted living center.

Investigators believe 31-year-old Candace Ballard and 23-year-old Jayne Phillips stole jewelry, credit cards and computers from residents at the Heritage at Brookstone assisted living facility in Acworth.

According to Cobb County Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce, the two suspects were looking for an assisted living home for an elderly relative. After touring Heritage at Brookstone, Pierce said one of the women sneaked into the building's private quarters to steal from the residents.

Credit cards taken from the home were used at stores in Cherokee, Cobb and Fulton counties, Pierce said.

Ballard and Phillips were arrested Tuesday. They were charged with three counts each of burglary and two counts each of credit card fraud. Pierce said investigators found some of the residents' missing items in the suspects' home.

Police are now working to determine if Ballard and Phillips are responsible for similar crimes in nearby areas.

Anyone who suspects they have been robbed is asked to Cobb County Police at 770-499-4185.
