PROBE College Fair coming to Kennesaw

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The popular PROBE College Fair will stop in Cobb County next week, giving high school students an opportunity to speak directly to representatives from their favorite colleges and universities.

The fair will be Thursday, Sept. 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw.

A number of schools in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas, will be represented. See a complete list of participating colleges.

Paper shredding, shoe donations in Cobb

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Keep Cobb Beautiful will hold a free paper shredding event for county residents this weekend.

Household documents will be accepted Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at Piedmont Church in Marietta. The event will only take paper products -- cardboard, plastic and other such items will not be accepted.

Attendees may also bring shoes to donate. Pairs of shoes should be bound or taped together.

Covering the Bases begins Friday

ACWORTH, Ga. -- The Acworth Police Department's Covering the Bases fundraiser will begin this Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

Covering the Bases is a 24-hour effort to raise money for local programs allowing disabled children to participate in sports. Past fundraisers have netted more than $130,000 for the cause.

The event features a baseball tournament, with Atlanta Braves legend Tom Glavine throwing out the first pitch. Other scheduled festivities include a midnight kickball tournament, a silent auction, a screening of The Lego Movie and a cornhole tournament with a Big Green Egg as the top prize.

Race this Weekend: Celebrate Freedom

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Celebrate Freedom Festival will kick off this year's event with a 5K and 10K race in Marietta.

Both events will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Jim R. Miller Park. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 10K scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will be off and running at 7:40 a.m.

Awards will be given to the first finishers overall, the first masters finishers and the top runners in each age group. All participants will receive T-shirts, goodie bags and two tickets to Celebrate Freedom, a free Christian music festival featuring such artists as Steven Curtis Chapman, Montell Jordan and Tenth Avenue North.

The 5K costs $30 in advance, while the 10K is $35. The prices go up to $40 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K on race morning.

DALLAS, Ga. -- The Paulding County Chamber of Commerce and the Acworth Business Association will hold a networking event in Dallas next month.

August's Net After Work will be Thursday, Aug. 28 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Stars and Strikes.

The event is open to both chamber members and guests. Admission is $5, which includes pizza, soda, bowling, one beer coupon and networking with local businesses.

Pike Nurseries to hold terrarium classes

(WXIA) -- Pike Nurseries is offering two classes for customers who want to bring the outdoors into their homes.

On Saturday, July 19, Pike shoppers can attend a free terrarium and fairy garden class, where they will learn how to create and maintain glass gardens.

The class is free and will be held at every Pike Nurseries location at 9 a.m.

A similar class geared toward children will be hosted Wednesday, July 23 at 10 a.m., also at every Pike store. Children will make their own fairy gardens to take home. The class costs $14.99 per child.
