Pike Nurseries to host ‘Pumpkin Planters Make & Take’ class

ATLANTA -- With the Halloween and Thanksgiving holidays right around the corner, now is the perfect time to add a “pop” of pumpkin to get into the fall spirit!

On Saturday, October 18 at 9 a.m., the experts at Pike Nurseries are helping customers celebrate the season with a fun Pumpkin Planters Make & Take customer class. Participants will receive step-by-step guidance to plant a pumpkin filled with pansies, snapdragons, peppers and other fall favorites.

The class costs $30 for supplies, including pumpkins, potting soil and a variety of plants for guests to create their own personalized planter to take home!

Chattahoochee Tech to hold career fair

ACWORTH, Ga. -- Chattahoochee Technical College will hold its annual College and Career Expo on Wednesday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

More than 90 colleges, universities and companies are scheduled to attend this year's event.

Everyone is invited to stop by the fair, which will be held at the North Metro Campus in Acworth.

Thirteen schools will be represented, including Brenau University, DeVry University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Georgia Southern University, Georgia State University, Kennesaw State University, Life University, Reinhardt University, Saint Leo University, Sherman College of Chiropractic, Southern Polytechnic State University, Strayer University and the University of Phoenix.

ATLANTA –- As an official kickoff to the fall season, Pike Nurseries is hosting its annual Gardenfest event on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all garden center locations.

PROBE College Fair coming to Kennesaw

KENNESAW, Ga. -- The popular PROBE College Fair will stop in Cobb County next week, giving high school students an opportunity to speak directly to representatives from their favorite colleges and universities.

The fair will be Thursday, Sept. 25 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Town Center at Cobb in Kennesaw.

A number of schools in several states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and the Carolinas, will be represented. See a complete list of participating colleges.

Paper shredding, shoe donations in Cobb

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Keep Cobb Beautiful will hold a free paper shredding event for county residents this weekend.

Household documents will be accepted Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to noon at Piedmont Church in Marietta. The event will only take paper products -- cardboard, plastic and other such items will not be accepted.

Attendees may also bring shoes to donate. Pairs of shoes should be bound or taped together.

Covering the Bases begins Friday

Covering the Bases begins Friday

ACWORTH, Ga. -- The Acworth Police Department's Covering the Bases fundraiser will begin this Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

Covering the Bases is a 24-hour effort to raise money for local programs allowing disabled children to participate in sports. Past fundraisers have netted more than $130,000 for the cause.

The event features a baseball tournament, with Atlanta Braves legend Tom Glavine throwing out the first pitch. Other scheduled festivities include a midnight kickball tournament, a silent auction, a screening of The Lego Movie and a cornhole tournament with a Big Green Egg as the top prize.

Race this Weekend: Celebrate Freedom

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Celebrate Freedom Festival will kick off this year's event with a 5K and 10K race in Marietta.

Both events will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Jim R. Miller Park. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 10K scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will be off and running at 7:40 a.m.

Awards will be given to the first finishers overall, the first masters finishers and the top runners in each age group. All participants will receive T-shirts, goodie bags and two tickets to Celebrate Freedom, a free Christian music festival featuring such artists as Steven Curtis Chapman, Montell Jordan and Tenth Avenue North.

The 5K costs $30 in advance, while the 10K is $35. The prices go up to $40 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K on race morning.
