Students invited to Pizza Farm 2014

FOREST PARK, Ga. -- How do you expose urban youth to Georgia’s agriculture? You open a Pizza Farm!

Fourth and fifth grade students from the Atlanta metropolitan area will learn about Georgia agriculture by making, and eating, pizza at the second annual Pizza Farm event.

County agents with the Cooperative Extension Metro Collaborative of Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb and Clayton counties will lead the event set for Oct. 21-23 at the Georgia State Farmers Market in Forest Park, Ga. The students will learn how dairy, vegetables, grains and meats come together to make the pizza.

“Many children just think their food comes from the grocery store,” said Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension. “The Pizza Farm will teach them that a pizza starts on a farm. The students will learn about good nutrition by seeing how Georgia Grown meat and vegetables are used to make a pizza. They’ll also learn how to fit pizza into a healthy, nutrition filled diet.”

Exhibits on the origins of pizza ingredients will be presented in a circuit of stations set up around the State Farmers Market Exhibit Hall. University of Georgia Extension agents, specialists and volunteers will guide the students through pizza-themed stations where they’ll learn the origins of items found on a pizza - cheese, tomatoes, dough, pepperoni and sausage. Other stations will focus on the importance of staying active and following the Choose My Plate nutrition guidelines.

Students will also be able to see live animals including dairy cows and pigs. The event is open to public school, private school and home school students and incorporates Georgia’s Performance Standards for fourth and fifth grades.

Pizza Farm 2014 is sponsored by UGA Cooperative Extension in collaboration with the Georgia Department of Agriculture.
