MARIETTA, Ga. -- WellStar Health System has chosen Candice Saunders as its new president and chief operating officer.
Saunders will take over her new role after current president and CEO Reynold Jennings' contract expires on Dec. 31, 2015.
"WellStar is critical and essential to the communities it serves. More than 1.4 million people rely on our services to live a healthy life," Saunders said in a release. "With my new responsibilities, I will provide leadership continuity to ensure that our system continues to play a major role in providing world-class healthcare to the people of metro Atlanta and northwest Georgia for years to come."
In her current position of COO, Saunders developed WellStar's Hospital Presidents Council, which connects the system's five hospitals to increase efficiency, improve communication and enhance patient satisfaction.
Before joining WellStar, Saunders served as vice president of clinical strategy and service lines for Inova Health System in Falls Church, Va. She has also worked for Atlanta's Emory University School of Medicine and its network of medical centers, and is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Saunders began her medical career as a critical care nurse in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She has a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of South Florida and master's degrees in business administration and health services administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
