District Teacher of the Year named in Cobb County | News
MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Cobb County School District named Dr. Richard Kaht of Dickerson Middle School the 2012-2013 District Teacher of the Year.
Kaht, a science teacher, was surprised with the announcement by Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa at an assembly at Dickerson in front of students and staff.
Along with the honor, Kaht will have his handprints on Marietta Square, receive a one-year vehicle lease from Ed Voyles Automotive and represent Cobb in the statewide run.
Kaht began working in public schools in 1995 as a Georgia History teacher at an inner-city DeKalb middle school. He joined Cobb in 1997, at Campbell Middle teaching history and science, then came to Dickerson in 1999.
Dickerson's FTC Robotics Club was started by Kaht last year. The extracurricular team received two top ten finished when competing against other teams.
Also at Dickerson, Kaht has participated in the DMS Leadership Team, helped implement the Olweus Bullying Prevention program and collaborated with other science teachers to improve instruction throughout Cobb County.
Dickerson incorporates humor in his teachings, and uses hands-on learning for students to explore various areas of science.
"If students do not enjoy my class, it will be that much harder for them to learn the material and take ownership in the concepts," Kaht said.
