ACWORTH, Ga. – A 34-year-old man is being held without bond after being accused of killing his parents on Thanksgiving Day.

According to police, Dustin Ray Dixon fired several shots inside his family’s home on Camden Lake Drive in Acworth.

Dixon's sister and grandmother managed to escape after hiding behind a car and a house nearby.  His mother, 60-year-old Ellen DeLoach, never made it past the front porch. Her husband – Dixon’s stepfather – Bradley DeLoach, 58, was also killed.

Neighbors called 911 after hearing gunshots.

“We heard gunshots, we heard a woman screaming -- it was really intense,” said Courtney Wooley.

Dixon was arrested on the house's front lawn. He is charged with murder and aggravated assault.

Close family friends told 11Alive’s Rebecca Lindstrom that Dixon that he is schizophrenic. Neighbors said he acted intoxicated on Thursday night.

Police have yet to discuss a motive.  Wooley said after the rampage, Dixon didn't fight back.

“They were like, ‘Put your hands up in the air’ He was like, “I'm listening,’” Wooley said.

Dixon was visiting for the holiday. He lives about 40 minutes away in Woodstock.

A family living in the neighborhood rented a room to Dixon. They often took in people diagnosed with mental illnesses, trying to get on their feet.  They said the man that lived with them was kind and loved his family.  They have no idea where he would get a gun.

Dixon's mom, Ellen, was an artist. Her work was displayed at the Bill Lowe gallery in Atlanta and in Chicago.  His step-father Michael was a self-employed architect who worked out of the house.

Dixon is being without bail at Cobb County Jail.
