GBI names man killed in Bartow Co. deputy-involved shooting | News
ACWORTH, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau Investigation is naming the man who was killed in an overnight deputy-involved shooting in Bartow County.
A spokesman with the GBI says 50-year-old Andrew Earl Abernathy was shot and killed after a confrontation with Bartow County Sheriff deputies.
According to officials, deputies were called to the 4500 block of Bartow Carver Road around 11 p.m. for a domestic call. When deputies arrived, officials say they found a man and woman drunk inside the home.
Deputies began interviewing the woman and that's when investigators say the man, the woman's boyfriend, stepped out onto the porch with a .22 caliber rifle and pointed it at responding deputies.
A press release from the GBI states that deputies repeatedly commanded the man, who they are not naming at this time, to drop his weapon. When he did not, they fired multiple times and struck the man. He was transported to Cartersville Medical Center where he later died.
The GBI medical examiner will perform an autopsy to determine an official cause of death.
The investigation is ongoing.
