Weekend roadwork planned for I-85, Ga. 400, Connector

(WXIA) -- With a warm weekend on the horizon, the Georgia Department of Transportation plans to perform some much-needed roadwork throughout north Georgia.

Closures and delays can be expected on a number of major roads and highways.

"Plan ahead -- I can't say it enough," GDOT District Construction Engineer Shun Pringle said in a release. "If you plan ahead, you can avoid some potentially heavy delays."

Some notable roadwork includes:

Downtown Connector
Two right lanes of I-75/85 north near University Avenue will be closed for pavement work Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

I-285
Three lanes will be closed in both directions between West Paces Ferry and Roswell roads for sign replacements. All work will take place overnight -- from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Cobb County teachers to get bonus for ice storm duty

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- The Cobb County School Board approved a reward for educators who stuck around to care for students during the January ice storm.

Hourly employees who stayed with students past 3 p.m. will get overtime and a $25 per hour bonus.

Salary employees will get a comp day.

Inalfa Roof Systems bringing 100 jobs to Acworth

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -- Inalfa Roof Systems announced Thursday that it will expand its regional headquarters in Cherokee County, creating 100 new jobs and bringing $6 million to the area.

The 165,000-square-foot facility is located in the Cherokee 75 Corporate Park in the Acworth area. The company, a provider of vehicle roof systems, plans to expand it by 45,000 square feet.

"Inalfa is a great example of a company that's been able to make the most of all that Cherokee County has to offer," Cherokee Office of Economic Development Chairman Marshall Day said in a release. "We recognize the importance of existing industry and will continue to be an advocate for them for years to come."

The expansion will allow Inalfa to add a bi-processed injection molding operation that places black lining around sunroofs, according to a statement from Gov. Nathan Deal's office.

Inalfa said the expansion will be complete by September 2014.

ATLANTA -- As the GHSA state basketball tournament heads for the semifinal round, there is a new edition of the USA Today Metro Atlanta Super 25 Boys Basketball Poll. The GACS boys continue to lead the way. 

The Greater Atlanta Christian Boys are marching toward Macon and holding down the top spot, followed by Wheeler, Allatoona, North Gwinnett and Miller Grove.

Berkmar is 6, with Walton, Columbia, Pebblebrook, Stephenson, and Alexander completing the top 10.

ATLANTA -- The latest edition of the USA Today Metro Atlanta Super 25 Girls Poll is ready for inspection. The McEachern girls hang on to the top spot as the GHSA state tournament heads for semifinal weekend.

McEachern and Southwest DeKalb are 1 and 2 again this week with Redan, Parkview, and Archer in the top 5.

North Forsyth, Tucker, Hillgrove,Wesleyan and Norcross round out the top 10.

Driver charged in deadly Acworth DUI crash

ACWORTH, Ga. -- An Acworth man was arrested after allegedly causing an accident that took the life of another driver.

It happened Saturday at around 12:40 a.m. on Mars Hill Road near Cobb Parkway.

Kenneth Chitwood, 48, was driving under the influence when he swerved out of his lane and hit a Ford F-150 pulling a single axle cargo trailer, according to police.

The F-150 was stopped in a lane transition area while its driver, 50-year-old James "Peyton" Underwood, placed advertising signs along the side of the road.

Cobb County Police Officer Mike Bowman said Underwood was standing next to his truck at the time of the accident. He was hit and knocked to the ground by Chitwood's Chevrolet Silverado.

Underwood was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
