Race this weekend: Battle of Allatoona Creek

ACWORTH, Ga. -- The second race in the 2015 Mountain Goat Adventures Trail Run Series will be held in Acworth this weekend.

Battle of Allatoona Creek will be Saturday, Apr. 18. A 10-mile trail run will begin at 8:30 a.m.; there is also a 4-mile option, which will be off and running at 8:40 a.m.

Children are welcome to participate in a free run of their own. It will be held in a grassy field near the course. All finishers will be given medals.

Runners in the grown-up race will receive soft wicking T-shirts. The top three male and female finishers will be given $100 cash prizes, and medals will be presented to the top three runners in each age group.

Registration fees are:

4-mile race
$35 in advance, $40 on race day

10-mile race
$40 in advance, $45 on race day

Cobb aquatic centers offer lifeguard training

Cobb aquatic centers offer lifeguard training

COBB COUNTY, Ga. -- Cobb County is offering discounted lifeguard training programs, just in time for summer.

The usual $200 price tag has been reduced to $100. A $65 fee is due at registration, while the additional $35 must be paid directly to the American Red Cross.

The course will train participants in how to be effective lifeguards. It includes two years' certification in lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR/AED.

Classes will be offered at each of Cobb County's four aquatic centers.

EMERSON, Ga. -- If a half marathon is on your list of goals for 2015, Georgia will host several 13.1-mile races throughout the year.

The Wine and Chocolate Half Marathon, a new Valentine's Day tradition, will be Saturday, Feb. 14 at LakePoint Sports Complex in Bartow County.

Runners will race through beautiful Emerson, then enjoy a post-race wine brunch and block party. All participants will receive T-shirts and goodie bags filled with chocolate and wine swag.

For those who aren't ready to tackle a half marathon, Wine and Chocolate also offers 5K and 10K options.

Covering the Bases begins Friday

ACWORTH, Ga. -- The Acworth Police Department's Covering the Bases fundraiser will begin this Friday, Sept. 5 at 7 p.m.

Covering the Bases is a 24-hour effort to raise money for local programs allowing disabled children to participate in sports. Past fundraisers have netted more than $130,000 for the cause.

The event features a baseball tournament, with Atlanta Braves legend Tom Glavine throwing out the first pitch. Other scheduled festivities include a midnight kickball tournament, a silent auction, a screening of The Lego Movie and a cornhole tournament with a Big Green Egg as the top prize.

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The Celebrate Freedom Festival will kick off this year's event with a 5K and 10K race in Marietta.

Both events will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 at Jim R. Miller Park. Registration opens at 6 a.m., with the 10K scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K will be off and running at 7:40 a.m.

Awards will be given to the first finishers overall, the first masters finishers and the top runners in each age group. All participants will receive T-shirts, goodie bags and two tickets to Celebrate Freedom, a free Christian music festival featuring such artists as Steven Curtis Chapman, Montell Jordan and Tenth Avenue North.

The 5K costs $30 in advance, while the 10K is $35. The prices go up to $40 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K on race morning.

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

Atlanta Track Club launches scholarship program

(WXIA) -- Youth running groups, rejoice -- the Atlanta Track Club has created a scholarship program just for you.

The Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge will award scholarships to the three organizations that have the most children registered for the 2014 Peachtree Jr. or Lil' Peach Dash.

The first place team will be given a $1,500 scholarship, a $1,250 cash donation from the Atlanta Track Club and $250 in Sports Authority store credit. Two runners-up will each get $750 scholarships, $500 donations and $250 in Sports Authority credit.

"Through the Peachtree Jr. Participant Challenge, we are able to give back to organizations that share our goal of inspiring children to be healthier and more active," Atlanta Track Club Executive Director Rich Kenah said in a release. "Atlanta Track Club is proud to partner with Sports Authority to offer these scholarships to provide extra motivation to keep kids moving."
