KSU Rallies to Stun UNC Asheville

KENNESAW, Ga. - Sametria Gideon scored a career-high 25 points, leading for Lady Owls in double-figures in scoring as the Kennesaw State women's basketball team rallied from an 11-point deficit to stun UNC Asheville, 83-79, at the KSU Convocation Center Saturday night.

 The Lady Owls (4-6) trailed for the entire contest until late in the second half.  Down 11 with just under six minutes to go, a 3-pointer by Ashley Holliday sparked an, 8-0, run to get the Lady Owls back into the contest.  After a steal by Elaina Gray on the defensive end, Taylor Mills connected on a 3-pointer of her own to cut the lead down to five, 73-68.  Following a defensive stop, Holliday found Kristina Wells alone for a lay-up to slice the lead down to three with 4:30 left in the contest.

Falcons honor high school coaches at weekend luncheon

 

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Falcons hosted their Fourth Annual Salute to High School Football Luncheon on Saturday, December 10. Local coaches like Jess Simpson from Buford High School, Gary Varner from Allatoona High School, and Michael Carson from MLK Jr. High School were honored according to their classification.

The luncheon, held at the Georgia World Congress Center, was sponsored by the AirTran Airways, hhgreggm and Russell Athletic, among others. Former Falcon, Alge Crumpler served as keynote speaker for the event.  

Also, honored at the event was Dave Hunter, a legendary coach at Brookwood High School; Hunter was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Also honored at the ceremony was Cameron Sutton of Jonesboro High School,  he was awarded with the Warrick Dunn Captain in the Community of the Year Award.

The Falcons will host a football clinic for high school coaches, next spring.

Chattahoochee Tech finishes No. 1 in coaches' poll

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Chattahoochee Tech's football team has been named champion of the National Club Football Association in the league's final coaches' poll released this week.

The Golden Eagles finished with 141 total points in the final poll, including seven first-place votes.

The National Club Football Association is a division of Collegiate Club Sports Leagues, a national organization that oversees college club sports.

Chattahoochee Technical College has had a football program for two years. It is the largest technical college in Georgia with an enrollment of more than 13,000 and has eight campus locations serving Bartow, Cherokee, Cobb, Gilmer, Paulding, and Pickens counties.

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Silverbacks have signed a veteran defender, making him the first new face to be added to the 2012 roster.

Martyn Lancaster is no stranger to Atlanta -- he played for the Silverbacks in 2007 and 2008, when the team was still part of the United Soccer Leagues. Last season, he competed with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers, where he was voted Player of the Year.

"It's a great opportunity for us to bring in Martyn, who just finished a season as one of the key leaders on a team that went to the NASL championship game," said Silverbacks director of soccer Rodrigo Rios. "He is reliable and has good abilities, and I think he will help improve our defense tremendously."

ATLANTA -- Michael Hines, rated the No. 2 junior golfer in the state of Georgia and 48th nationally in the class of 2012, signed a letter-of-intent to play at Georgia Tech during the recently-completed early signing period, head coach Bruce Heppler announced.

"We are very excited to have Michael join our program," said Heppler. "We feel we have signed the best player in the state for the 5th straight year. [Assistant] Coach [Christian] Newton has done a great job with this. Michael has some great physical skills, and I believe once he gets to use our facilities, his game will really grow.

"Michael has grown up around several of our guys from that area and truly understands the Georgia Tech way. He has embraced our program and our goals. He is a perfect fit."
